Review: theBalm Batter Up Creaseless Cream Eyeshadow

It's time for me to review my Holy Grail eyeshadow base :D
It's actually a cream eyeshadow!!

I've mentioned this countless of times if you've been a longtime reader :)
As from the title, it's theBalm's Batter Up Creaseless Cream Eyeshadow.

I'm going to be reviewing two shades, 'Base Hit Kit' and 'Home Plate Kate'.

'Base Hit Kit' (BHK)
'Home Plate Kate' (HPK)
Product Information:
Take your look from the minors to the majors! These smooth, even colors with a soft sheen can be used as eyeshadows, primers, even highlighters – the perfect triple hitter for girls who play hard on and off the field. (Product Description from the website)
These cream eyeshadows contain 5g of product, which is about the same as many other cream eyeshadows. Product should be used within 12 months, due to its tendency to dry up a bit. This is priced at USD18 on the website, it's priced at RM58 at SaSa Malaysia (bought it last year during 50% off). They have 2 other shades in this range:

Didn't buy these because they were darker shades.
Moving onto the product~

theBalm describes BHK as a 'soft golden glow'. It's actually a very muted gold, almost champagne-y to me. It's more of a brown gold, I was gonna say dirty gold but it's actually more brown.

theBalm's swatch of BHK.
I personally think this shade would look lovely on any skintone!

They described HPK as a 'hint of sheer rose'. It's more of pinkish silver (rose gold I guess) colour to me, that leans to the purple side. A light violet, if that's okay. It has a hint of an iridescent blue sparkle.

Let's compare those with my swatch!

Taken with flash.
It's a bit different lol. I guess it's due to the fact that my product is a bit dry (I'd have to soften them again with alcohol). When I first got them, they were already separating away from the sides, so yeah. I believe if you've bought it fresh from theBalm, it might be softer and blendable.

The product is not creamy, it's actually quite hard. It's best applied with the finger and you need to blend it very fast or else you'd have patches! Happens to me all the time LOL. Since I use this as a base, it's fine though. Once it sets, it won't budge at all! AT ALL.

As a cream eyeshadow, it's beautiful on the eyes. However, due to it's quick setting time, it's very hard to apply it evenly. I always end up using this with another shadow over it to intensify and to make it last longer.

As a base, this lasts 12 hours for me. I always use this when I go to Miri since I won't have time to touch up my makeup. At the end of the day, it doesn't crease, however, it will disappear at the inner corner of the eyes, especially if you rub it.

I've never used it as an eyeliner.

I think the reason why it lasts so long is because once it sets, it actually really sets. Much like Catrice and essence cream eyeshadows. For me, the Maybelline Color Tattoo just doesn't work with my oily lids.

---

Let's talk Pros and Cons!

PROS:

-As a base, it lasts 12 hours on my oily lids without creasing or fading.
-As a cream shadow, it doesn't crease but you need to build up a lot to have an even colour.
-Sweat-proof.
-Can be ordered online from the site (delivers internationally although pricey)
-Comparable to high-end brands (you can say this is high-end too I guess lol High-End Indie)
-Paraben and Cruelty-free.
-Makes eyeshadow vibrant.

CONS:

-Not locally available.
-Pricey.
-Product dries up easily.
-Only has 4 shades.
-Applies quite patchy due to dry formula.
-Not creamy.

Rating: 5/5 (My HG eyeshadow base)

Will I buy this again?

Yes! Preferably, a product that's not dried up D:

Do I recommend this?

Yes! Try it out, you may love it. Give it a chance if you have super oily lids. Dry lids might not appreciate it. Get it on a sale!

Where can you find this?

You can order from their website, here.
You can also buy from your nearest SaSa, Malaysia Branch (hopefully a decent one)
There are many places you can find theBalm on, but sometimes they don't carry this cream eyeshadow.

There you go, my HG eyeshadow base!
I really need to purchase another one that's not dry hopefully, to see if it's the same consistency.

But as it is, it is 100% Froggy-proved.

Have you tried it?
Do you want to try it?

Leave it in the comments :D

'til then, take care guys!

  1. Haha, "froggy-approved"! I think I may try these eyeshadows out. :) I've been wanting to try a cream base for the longest time, but I just haven't gotten around to it...

    1. If you don't mind some scary glittermania, essence and Catrice is comparable :D I'll be doing the review tomorrow i think. This eyeshadow is a bit pricey.

As much as I love the Catrice one, I do have a problem with it.

  2. I've never tried these before. I've been looking for some kind of eye primer for when I go to Japan (it's going to be super humid x.x) but I am really stuck on what to get. I don't think they sell these in Canada XD I'd probably have to buy these online.
    Have you ever tried an eye primer that worked really well before? It seems like your are an expert when it comes to eye products (-'w'-) senpaii!! I always waste all my money on lipstick >.>;;

    1. I count this as my HG eye primer for now but due to it's hard texture, blending shadows can be hard.

I love the essence eye primer next to this, then comes the e.l.f primer and theBalm primer. I've been trying out theBalm one and so far, I like it. It's a silicone based one and it feels like the face primer.

I've tried M.A.C Paint Pot (in Soft Ochre) and it doesn't work as well as a primer as I'd hoped. There are some duds, like Etude House's shimmer base and Canmake's eyeshadow base. Those are just a no-no for me.

I've tried UD but I can't really say if I love it..because the one I have is just rough on my eyes, hard to blend!

I think maybe you can find some good eye primers in Japan (although they never really go for long lasting vibrant colours), if you can go to Etude House and find the primer that's NOT the shimmer one (called Proof10 Eye Primer), it's comparable to UD I think.

Japan also makes good cream eyeshadow that can be doubled as eye primers I guess.

Last but not least, you can try NYX :3

  3. I was thinking of getting the elf eye primer since it is very inexpensive X3 Thank you so much for helping me out >.< I'll try looking for Etude House in Japan c: There are so many things I want to try from that line.
